🌿 History of 15 Number Papaya (Complete Information)
The 15 Number Papaya is a high-yield and disease-resistant variety developed from the well-known Taiwan 786 strain. A few years ago, the Taiwan 786 papaya plants were severely affected by a virus, which caused a significant decline in both fruit quality and yield.
During this period, a few plants were observed to be completely virus-free. These plants showed remarkable differences in growth rate, fruit size, and overall productivity compared to the infected ones.
To preserve these unique traits, seeds were collected from the healthy plants and studied extensively. After several experiments and tests, researchers successfully developed a new strain — the “15 Number Papaya”, which proved to be virus-free and highly productive.
The fruits of this new generation were rounder, sweeter, and more durable. Although the proportion of male plants was around 3–4%, the yield, sweetness, and shelf life of the fruits made this variety highly successful among farmers.
Today, 15 Number Papaya is one of the most popular and profitable papaya varieties cultivated across India — especially in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Gujarat, and Madhya Pradesh. It performs excellently in warm and moderate climates, and with proper irrigation and care, it provides exceptional yield per acre.
